This image not only makes us believe that the self is a unitary thing, but also defines selfhood around the action of seeing. However, as we gain new perspectives, we notice contradictions in the idea of a singular self. Like members of a family, different “selves” are interconnected, sharing overlapping features, yet none can fully represent the family, i.e. the self. They appear and disappear in different situations, sometimes together, sometimes alone. This work mixes still and moving images, exploring the self’s unstable, ethereal, and evolving nature. It invites viewers to observe the interaction between figures in two images and feel the attunement, harmony, and discordance between them. family's daily routines revealed different aspects of them that she overlooked. She began to view them as literary figures with sophisticated characteristics - the boredom with the known and confusion with the unknown subtly revealed through their actions. Seeking to capture their essence beyond just family ties, she explored their unique relationships with their home spaces. As long as the sense finds a way to explain the information, absurdity could turn into reason. This project rearranges everyday items in the artist’s apartment, such as sponges, cigarettes, candles, and vegetables. The items are seen too often to be paid attention to, but once combined in an unaccustomed way, they acquire a different sense of being. During the shooting period, the Chinese policy towards covid changed drastically — scientific facts become a tool for governance. The images examine the sense that operates upon the seemingly weird combinations of things, paralleling to the mental process of the people trying to makes sense of contradictory “explanation” of the pandemic. By placing an image within an electronic appliance whose function is related, such as washing clothes, growing plants and storing food, the photographs build interaction between the images and their surroundings. grandmother, whom I call A Po. Rather than approaching history through spectacle or explicit documentation, the work attends to small, almost imperceptible gestures. A Po experienced profound loss during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s. Her own grandfather was executed in the valley where she once lived, a place that later became both a site of trauma and survival. In her early years, she lived through extreme hardship: selling wild vegetables gathered from the mountains, walking long distances daily, and carrying night soil to make a living. She hated the land she was born into and swore never to return. After China’s economic reforms in the 1970s, she left and built a successful business in the city where I was born and raised, supporting four children on her own. Her relationship with her hometown has always been marked by contradiction—love and resentment, attachment and refusal. Returning to these old places later in life, she holds memories of pain drive her to leave, yet the same memories are what once compelled her to work, to survive, and to protect those she loved. No matter how far she goes, she has never been able to fully sever this bond. Now in her eighties, A Po has returned to a quieter rural life, finding peace in proximity to nature. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;In China, where the ideal image of a girl is defined by long, straight, black hair and an obedient attitude, coloured hair becomes a quiet refusal. Those who bleach or dye their hair are often seen as strange and rebellious. However, in that “weirdness” lies a chance to shape a different identity and step outside the boundaries of what is traditionally considered polite or proper. Hair becomes more than appearance. It is a quiet act of confrontation, a feminist gesture. These group portraits of young women capture a shared sense of defiance, but also with vulnerability.
